I know I need to finish last week. Sunday, we went to church
it started. She came out what do think of this outfit my usual response OK. It
just gets me off the hook for awhile then here comes the jewelry by this time I
tell her I don’t know. Then the huff well I don’t know what to wear I don’t
know what kind of people there are do they dress up dress casual I don’t know
she said. Like I have been there and know all of these things. I don’t care
what you wear just don’t go naked. You wear what you want and next Sunday you
will know. It was very casual tees and blue jeans. It was laid back nice
service I will go back again.
Monday, I went and
got fishing license didn’t really get a chance to go but the next day I went and
I actually caught a salmon about 20 inches long. It fought just like a big
redfish from the south. I brought it home and cleaned it. I cooked in my
instant pot yes you read that right I have a instant pot. I don’t know if I
really told you but I have 4 jobs here hunt, fish, cook and keep her butt here.
I do all the cooking except breakfast sometimes I don’t get up before her. As Budroux
would say she beats me up in tha morning. It came out good I put a little marinade on it
and steamed them I liked it. I just did 1 fillet we both suck that right down.
It was a lot better than smoked salmon I think the jury is still out on smoked.
That is all they do here smoke it and can it for the winter. Well if that is
what it takes to survive winter this ole boy is in trouble. I might have to go
back to my Louisiana ways that is why they made spot lights. To many deer on
the road and not enough traffic. I will try to do it right but I ain’t going to
starve. I did meet a guy from Shreveport Louisiana he said he moved here in
1992 his wife got a job here in the forestry. He told me that when he got off
the ferry he told his wife if she didn’t like it here that she could pack her
diddy bag up and go back home. He told her just to send him some money every
once in a while I ain’t leaving. I told him I had the same thoughts when I got
off the same ferry.
Wednesday I went
again fishing but it was a bust on salmon I caught some ugly looking fish
looked what I call a oysterfish but they call them ling cod. All I know that
you keep your fingers away from the 2 little spikes they will hurt you. I
caught few other little fish looked like a goggleye but it was dark red and
black stripes down the side. I was afraid to keep them I didn’t know if they
had a size limit or if you can even keep them. I just want to give you a little
more background on me. I have a lot of people that won’t eat fish at my house.
If I catch it I will cook it. You could have ask my dad. I would call him and
ask him if he wanted to eat fried fish at the house he would ask what kind I
ain’t eatin no trash fish. I think if it
swims in decent water you should be able to eat it. I might let you know how
they taste I might have to go real late one evening.
Thursday didn’t
catch much again it was raining and 52 degrees with wind about a 10 mph. It was
just a little nippy. Before I went back to the little house I bought me some
rubber boots. I can’t stand wet feet. I
came home and fixed my computers to catch the saints football that was what I
waited for all day. They started playing and finally I said screw it I will
listen to the online on the radio. With 7 min. left in the 2and quarter I got
to listen to them. Cell phone hotspot is for the birds. It might be ok if you
have good phone signal 2 bars just don’t cut it. I will have to wait until we
move into the other house it has DSL line and tv.
Friday I didn’t do
much we had to clean the little apartment. You know we left the vacuum cleaner
in the utility room. Hope Ashley enjoys, it was probably the best one we had in 40
years. We went out and bought one. Remember we are on a island that 40 dollar
vacuum cost 84 dollars but it worked. I forgot Dixie was scared of them. When I
turned it on she went crazy but there was no room to run from it. The house she
would hide in the back bedroom here the bedroom is the next room. It took her
all day to calm down. You would have thought I beat her she stayed under the
bed most of the day. We took a trip across the island to a little town called
Thorne Bay we had went to it when we came in June and checked the little store
out. I wanted to go again. I forgot how pretty the drive was. We got there and
found that groceries were quite bit cheaper. They also have 2 isles like sam’s
buy in bulk. That’s the isle that we are going to shop it had all what we liked
and bulk prices that I like. I guess no matter where you live in a rural town
you got to 30 miles to buy groceries. I will give you example the same bacon
brand was half price.
Saturday I decided to get up
early and go fishing. I promised her that we would go to the cave tour when I
got back fishing. You know 50/50 on the time. I did catch another salmon but I missed
4. I think I am getting this fishing stuff down. I got back in 2 hours cleaned
it, cleaned me and we took off. We went to the sign that said pavement ends 500
ft. it turned into a one lane dirt road with big holes in the middle. She didn’t
care much for that because when I dodge the holes it took her a little close to
the edge and some places it was straight down. Needless to say the ooh shit
handles were getting well used. I couldn’t figure out she would almost move on
the console when we got close it didn’t matter we were both going over at the
same time. She said these are not Verda
dirt roads you go in a ditch this one goes in a ravine. The drive it was pretty
but when I said that I noticed that I hadn’t seen a electric pole in about 20
miles that got her attention. She started to look at her phone no signal I didn’t
care how much she would shake it no dice nothing I got a little tickled she
didn’t think that is was funny. We made it to the cave and met the guides. They
told us that we needed to call for reservations before making the tour. It was
ok we didn’t have the right shoes or clothes to do the tour. She said we needed
to have rubber boots and jackets the cave was damp and 40 degrees. So back the
way we came I decided to take a detour down another dirt road that went to the
town of Whale Pass. It had a fishing dock, School, Library and a Post Office. It was all in about a 300 yard
square and that was it. But on the way there she did see the electric poles
come back. It took us a while to get back on pavement but I will make that
drive again I found a little store looked like somebody’s house that had
oysters I bought 2 dozen that is the way they sell them here and that was all
she had. They were good I shuck them and we added a little hot sauce and
ketchup. That is the only way to eat them right out of the shell. Well we made
it back to the house in 8 hrs see the time 50/50 2 hrs for me 8 hrs for her in her mind that was fair.
Sunday I decided to get up early and fish
before church. Just like when I was a kid me and Mike Paige would hit all the
ponds in Verda before church and if we were late daddy or brother Jerald would
come looking for us and bring us to church. She was going to go with me but
5:00 am was too early. I caught another salmon and decided to go back and get
her too see all the starfish on the rock beach. I cleaned the fish while she
got ready. I didn’t know you had to dress up for the beach that might be why I haven’t
caught a lot of fish. I told her dress for getting dirty you have to crawl down
a 15 ft rock bank to get to the water you might be a little over dressed. Another
huff and 20 more min of changing clothes we made it to the beach. She did see
what I was talking about. I fished she went and explored the beach the see all
the things that were left when the tide dropped. She was like a kid in a candy store
starfish all colors clams that would open and closed. There were funny looking
crabs and all kind of different varments on the beach. I wouldn’t tell her but
I did the same thing she did Saturday when I got up early I did more looking than
fishing. I did catch 2 more. It’s getting better. We got back and cleaned up
and went to church this time no problem on dressing for church 20 min and she’s
done that might be a record and that’s including at the house in Verda. On the
way back from church I saw 2 people picking some type of berrys on the side of
the road. I stopped and got out to see what they were picking. They said thimble
berrys I had seen them when we went to Thorne Bay the road was full of them. I
wasn’t going to stop and eat one I didn’t know if they were poisonous or not. I
eat a lot of critters but when it comes to plants I back off that stuff can
kill you. I tasted one they gave me it tasted like a strawberry just a little
tart. When you pick them they are a little cup the man picked one and put it on
his finger. They were neat looking berrys. We were laughing on the way back to
the house that we went fishing, starfish hunting and to church and it is only
12:30. When you get up at 5 in Alaska in the summers and the sun don’t go down
until 10:30 at night it is a looong day.
After thoughts she still not quite there yet
hasn’t slowed her mind down to fit this place. I told Kelly my sister that it
is laided back here. They say if you don’t get it done today you can do it tomorrow
and if it don’t get done then you might not needed it done. I almost had this
thinking back home so I am all right here. So far I haven’t seen anything that
would change my mind on the move. I do miss the kids and the family and friends
but she keeps me up to date every 5 min on what happening back home. I think
that is the way she copes with the move. I thought that by now I would be a
little home sick but not really I might have found my home. I say that now but
I haven’t been through winter yet. They say it can be the blues here we will
see.
